Here we all are again another week. Today we’re sitting in a virtual air-conditioned library in a virtual large city. Our hostess for this weekly gathering is the talented and gracious writer and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Field’s. We’re the Friday Fictioneers group. Our challenge this week and every week is to write an original story with no more than 100 words. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was supplied by Marie Gail Stratford. Thanks, Marie Gail.
To read the other stories by the group members, just click on the link given below, then on the little blue frog in the blue box.

MAGICAL REALM by P.S. Joshi
Betty grabbed a hand towel and wiped her forehead where the sweat inched down.
It was midsummer in the city and intense heat bounced off everything outside. Even breathing was an effort.
Lucky she had a magical realm to escape to. Her coach waited outside.
“Princess,” her dad said as he opened the door of his taxi. “Off we go to the land of castles, princes, and wicked witches.”
Shorty he pulled up in front of the main library. Betty got out. “Bye Dad,” she called as she walked up the steps and into the air-conditioned land of books.
Books always take you to whatever realm you want to travel to. Nice piece of writing.

I used to call it my fairy land, it was not air conditioned and we were not supposed to chatter. This reminded me of my school library. Great post.

This reminds of a children’s book I read to my son where the library is called a word castle. Well done.

Really lovely story, Suzanne. It reminds me of the world I used to inhabit, thanks to books. Good description of the mid-summer heat, too.

Thanks, Sandra. I’m so happy you liked the story. I especially enjoyed Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses”. An aunt and uncle gave it to me as a gift. When I was a little older I loved mysteries. I didn’t have much of a problem describing the heat as we’re going through the premonsoon months of baking heat right now. The monsoon should come along, we hope, in mid-June. 🙂 — Suzanne

Perfect…the library was a childhood retreat of mine as well. For poor kids, the library really can be a magical land. I know it was the only place I ever got to be a princess, or a time traveler, or an astronaut. Much love to the library, might have to check the local and see if they need any volunteers. Now, Husband can take me places, but I bet there are some little girls out there who are still taping their shoes and dreaming…and maybe they need me.

Thanks, MW. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. I always loved the library from the first time my dad took me. I hope free libraries last forever. You’re right about poor kids. They step into a magical world entirely different from their own. It’s great you want to volunteer at your local library. I used to teach reading as a first grade teacher. I loved it because I got to see how excited kids became as they began reading. 🙂 — Suzanne

Lovely story! But how come whenever I go to the library I wind up with overdue book fines and young children screaming “is that bald man really that old, mommy?”
LikeLike
Thanks, Perry. Hilarious. I’ve had a few book fines myself. I found out that you can now renew books online. There will always be kids and their remarks, bless them. Maybe that’s the reason some of the elderly ( I know you’re not that old) turn off their hearing aids. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. 😀 — Suzanne
