Here we are for another week. Today we’ve gathered near a virtual body of water. Our hostess for this group meeting is the talented and gracious author and artist Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. We’re the Friday Fictioneers group. Our challenge for this week and every week is to each write an original story with no more than 100 words, not including the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was supplied by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields herself. Thanks, Rochelle.
To read the other stories by the group members, just click on the link given below, then on the little blue frog in the blue box.
The link for this week’s stories is as follows:

CHICKENS NEAR THE SEA by P.S. Joshi
On the planet Zenco, there was the beautiful Sea of Hushup. The only problem was it was full of vicious mermaids.
“Don’t worry, Druther,” Pictoo said as he read the latest information. “Those mermaids are located only around the island in the middle of the sea. The shores are safe.”
Druther was worried, but he had little choice. He’d signed on for this job of checking water quality as all others were strangely taken.
The two began work. There was a splash of silvery tails and fanged-tooth mermaids appeared. “Who do you think gave out your information?” they asked.
That’s what you call a sting in the tail

Ancient mythology is chock full of lessons like that, about the dark side of human nature, mankind’s more evil impulses. This is quite a good variation of one of those kinds of stories.

Thanks, Larry. Men were always getting fooled, outsmarted by those mythological creatures. It’s a bit like men today being outsmarted by aliens.on TV and in the movies. I’m so pleased you liked the story. ๐ — Suzanne

Great story, Suzanne! This line made me laugh out loud: “The only problem was it was full of vicious mermaids.”
I enjoy your sense of humor. Who would have thought of vicious and sneaky mermaids?!

Thanks, Vijaya. I’m so happy you appreciate my sense of humor. Did you notice where I said all the other jobs were “strangely taken”? No one wanted that job for good reason. Those two were no doubt the slowest to catch on. I’m glad you liked the story. ๐ — Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,
It just shows you can’t even trust a mermaid. ๐ Cute story.

I do believe those mermaids have a dark side! I think this guy is doomed. There’s no way he can outsmart the mermaids, especially if they have fangs! Great story, Suzanne.

Thanks, Amy. Those mermaids are dark indeed. I’m afraid those guys are doomed. If they depend on brains to outsmart the mermaids, you might say they’re defenceless. Those fangs are bad news. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the story. ๐ — Suzanne

Thanks, El. I’m happy you liked the name of the sea. I was forgetting this is an international group of writers. In the U.S. there’s a brand of tuna named “Chicken of the Sea”. (At least there used to be.) “Chicken” is also a derogatory term for someone who’s a coward. Yes, people are enchanted with mermaids. I loved your mermaid story. ๐ — Suzanne

We have ‘chicken’ for ‘coward’ too Suzanne. But it can also be used as a term of endearment up north along with ‘duck’ – strange old beast that English is!

When I saw your title, I thought we’d be hearing from Charlie Tuna (who unfortunately was never good enough for Chicken of the Sea). They’ve got Angry Birds now, why not Vicious Mermaids? The Sea of Hushup was hilarious.

I’m thinking the planet of Zenco might be a place to stay away from. Fanged mermaids and misinformation don’t inspire confidence for the space tourist of the future. Fun story.
