NOT CAREFUL WHAT HE WISHED FOR by P.S. Joshi
In Rome in the Middle Ages a man named Rodolfo lived in the heart of the city not far from a large fountain. He was a powerfully-built man, proud of his muscles.
One hot day an old bent peddler pulled his cart down Rodolfo’s street. Noticing the well-built young man he stopped in front of him.
“Signor,” he whispered, leaning close, “I have something you might like.”
He reached under a cloth in the middle of the cart and pulled out a brass lamp. It needed polishing but was in perfect condition despite its ancient appearance.
Rodolfo studied it and decided he must have it.
“How much do you want for it old man? I’ve just finished carving some furniture for a client and may be able to afford it if you don’t overcharge.”
They haggled and Rodolfo paid.
As the old man hobbled off he said, “It’ll grant wishes but be careful what you ask for.”
Rodolfo just laughed. “You’re crazy old man.”
He took his purchase inside and started to clean it. In jest he said to the lamp, “I want to be famous in all Rome.”
The next morning there was a new figure on the fountain.”

Oh dear, and the man *just* told him to be careful, too. Some people just won’t listen. The rest of Rome is lucky that his ill-thought wish only negatively affected him!

Great story Suzanne. It reminds me of when I used to run a Dungeons & Dragons game many years ago. One of the players had a ring of wishing, and they were taking refugees across country. There was five hundred of the refugees but only food to feed a hundred at most. The wish they used was “I wish we had enough food for all the refugees that is easily transportable,” So all this food appeared everywhere, and all the refugees vanished and then reappeared in these metal wire frames on small wheels with the runes for “Walmart” on the handles (shopping trolleys) I always had fun with them when they used wishes because I gave them exactly what they wanted, like the man in your story. Just not the way he meant. He got his wish though.

Haha definintly not being careful what he wished for. Should have been specific I guessed or thought of more than his fame or muscles. Reminds me of certain guys at the gym. Great writing Suzanne 🙂

Thanks for the great comment, Mandi. I guess you would run into some guys at the gym who are like that. I hope none come into possession of an ancient brass lamp. I’m glad you enjoyed the story. 🙂 — Suzanne
