Here we are again and this week we’re gathered in Dale’s restaurant. We’ve come together to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneer’s group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words, not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and be inspired by the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Dale Rogerson. Thanks, Dale. To read the other stories by group members, just click on the link below, then on the smiling frog. Next, follow the given directions.

The Happy Afternoons Club trailed into the Hearty Appetite restaurant.

Once a week, they met for lunch to hear gossip and stuff their faces.

This group had started out thirty years before with ten members. They were now down to four.

They were women who didn’t work and whose children were on their own. Many of the original group were now working themselves.

Most had to as they were divorced or widowed.

“Ladies,” said Barbara, “Has anyone heard anything new?”

Florence sighed,” I have a new vacuum cleaner.”

“Is that all?” moaned Lois.

“This pie is delicious,” Florence shot back.

    • Thanks, Rochelle. I’m glad you enjoyed the story. Yes, I’m afraid they need to have other hobbies or activities than gossip and eating. The world is passing them by while they feed their faces. 😀 — Suzanne

    • Thanks, Dale. Unless they want to eat longer. One of the problems might be they don’t have younger children any longer to bring home the latest news. My grandmother used to hand out cookies to younger children and seemed to know much of what was going on though she never left the house in later years. 😀 — Suzanne

    • Thanks, Nan. You’re right. I wrote it to be a bit snarky on purpose. Of course, some people do get a bit snarky as they age. There’s a lot of that going around these days. Though, there’s still the preference for having company while eating that may be the glue that keeps them together. 🙂 — Suzanne

    • Thanks, Keith. Maybe there was temporarily a different cook or her taste buds were taking a vacation before. It might have also been it was the first thing she could think of to answer back. She seems to have been in a snarky mood. 🙂 — Suzanne
