Here we are again and this week we’re gathered on a street in Jerusalem. We’ve come together to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneer’s group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words, not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and be inspired by the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Rochelle. Thanks, Rochelle. Like Ruth by P.S. Joshi

 

Doris, her husband, and their small son had lived with her mother-in-law Marion for several years. Now John had been killed in an accident and her job wasn’t bringing in enough money. One day Marion came to her.

“Doris, my widowed brother in Chicago would like to have us come and live with him. He has a large house and is lonesome all alone.”

Doris thought of the story of Ruth and Naomi in her Bible.

     For, where you go, there I shall go, where you live, there I shall live…

She hugged Marion.

“Yes, Mom, we’ll go with you.”

 

Some of the Friday Fictioneers were curious about my daughter’s wedding. I’m enclosing photos taken at the wedding reception.

Sayjal also recently got a part in the popular weekly serial “Empire”. She’s not in every episode but was in the first one and recently in a fourth one. She plays the part of an agent for the main character Cookie Lyons played by the movie and TV star Taraji P. Henson. For those of you who receive my Facebook page, there is an Instagram scene on it.   3. Thanks, Neil. Some women are very close to their mothers-in-law. This probably happens especially if they weren’t close to their own mothers or their mothers died when they were young. I called my mother-in-law “Amma” because everyone else did. My mother called my dad’s father “Dad”. He lived with them for years. My husband called my parents Mom and Dad. It’s not uncommon. 🙂 — Suzanne

    • Thanks, Tannille. I heard the wedding and reception was a big success. My daughter’s friends are actors, dancers, and do humor so provided the entertainment themselves. She also provided a good meal. She’d planned it for months. 🙂 — Suzanne

      • I’m hours away from starting to move. I have a week and a half to do so… I’ve not had so much time in twenty or so years… usually less than 24 hours. Somehow, it’s both less stressful, and moreso at the same time.

  9. What a lovely take on the prompt and the story of the Holy Land as an association. I know many who have a close – sometimes even closer than with their own parents – relationship with their in-laws. It can often be an and/and, too.
    Also, thanks for the lovely photos of the wedding! HOW FUN!!!!! 🙂

    • Thanks, Na’ama. I’m glad you liked the story. My mother called my dad’s father “Dad” and he lived with them for years. I called my husband’s mother “Amma” as everyone else did. My husband called my parents “Mom” and “Dad” and after my dad died, Mom lived with us for some years until her Alzheimer’s made it difficult for us to care for her properly and I had to find a good nearby nursing home for her. You’re welcome for the photos of the wedding. Everyone seemed to have fun. 🙂 — Suzanne

        Yeah about the in-laws names. It is not that I think there’s anything wrong with calling them by name or any respectful name – I was just a bit surprised at the comment about calling in-laws “mom” or “dad” — may well be a matter of culture/tradition/expectations/norms in different places. 🙂

    • Thanks, Nobbinmaug. I wasn’t watching it until my daughter was hired for a part. Now I’ve been watching it and I’m hooked. I’m hoping there’ll be a spin-off as this is the last season. Guests at the wedding had a good time. My daughter loves family and friends and planned everything so they’d have fun. I’m physically disabled, living in India, and don’t travel well so I wrote and sent an email my daughter had her sister-in-law read to everyone. She loved it. She sent me a huge wedding album. 🙂 — Suzanne

  19. Getting a break in the serial Empire is a huge. Many congratulations!. Coming back to the story, good that Doris had found a help in Marion’s brother. Is there an agenda to get her married to Marion’s brother, who is widower and probably lonely?

    • Thanks, Abhijit. We’re really happy Sayjal got this part on a popular serial on TV. Other than filmed commercials, most of her work has been on the stage. She’s been acting for years so has honed her skills. With the story, I modernized the Biblical story in the Book of Ruth. In the Bible she goes with her mother-in-law back to Jerusalem and becomes acquainted with Naomi’s wealthy relative, eventually marrying him. 🙂 — Suzanne

  24. Your story was a very enjoyable and touching read, Suzanne. I’ve had my son-in-law’s call me mom. I would always find it endearing.
    Congratulations to you and your daughter on her wedding and acting success. BRAVO …!!!! She’s a beautiful young lady. I love her clever take on marriage. It’s unique. It looks like everyone had a grand time.
