Here we are this week sitting around a large desk. We’ve gathered again to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneers group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words, not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Claire Sheldon. Thanks, Claire.

THE STORY by P.S. Joshi

Janie sat and stared at the vacant computer screen. The magazine wanted a nonfiction story about some exciting adventure she’d had in her life.  What adventure? She was fourteen years old for crying out loud.

Then she thought about her summer camp experience. She didn’t know about exciting. It was more terrifically embarrassing. The skunk came out of nowhere.

It must have smelled her sandwich as it followed her. The camp counselor came running when she screamed. All the commotion scared the skunk and it ran off.

Oh, well. She began, Last summer I had an adventure at Camp Wigwam.

FREEDOM by P.S. Joshi

They got on the bus and found seats near the back.

It was the first time they’d traveled alone without a parent. Allowances had been saved for weeks for their trip to Centerville and back.

Their mothers thought they were at a school friend’s house. What an adventure, age thirteen and lunch and shopping on their own.

When they arrived, they chose a restaurant. They then ate until they felt stuffed.

After they paid for the meal, they had twenty cents left.

“Oh well,” said Lucy, “we’ll shop another time.”

Doris agreed.

Somehow, they could never save that much again.

He’s also searching for any friends who may be around to bring him up-to-date and offer companionship. We find him reaching the sight of the tavern. We will read further episodes as he continues to learn his plight from friends along the way. Now for today’s story.

FURTHER ADVENTURES OF SIR RODERICK by P.S. Joshi

Sir Roderick was greatly disappointed when he saw the Spotted Stallion, his favorite drinking place. The wooden structure of inn and stables had rotted leaving only the brick fireplace and oven with the kitchen chimney. The woods had taken over the courtyard.

He was overjoyed at seeing both his old friend, Sir Thomas, and his favorite serving girl, Rose.

Thomas greeted him with a hug and moist eyes, “Roderick, you old scoundrel. I knew you’d be back.”

Rose greeted him with a peck on the cheek.
