Here we are this week in a garden near a purple door. We’ve gathered in this lovely place to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneers group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words, not including the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by C.E. Ayr. Thanks, C.E.

AN IGNORED WARNING? by P.S. Joshi

John dreamed every night about a purple door. It was always the same. He’d touch the door and wake up.

He told his wife about it but she just told him not to pay attention.

One night he was finally able to open the door.

On the other side was a marvelous vista of an exquisite green meadow full of flowers and a magnificent castle in the distance.

John’s wife woke to find him lifeless, stiff, and cold beside her.

The doctor at the hospital spoke with her.

“The autopsy shows it was a heart attack. Was there any warning?”

SOME DAY A PRINCE by P.S. Joshi

Laura always told her friends, “One day a prince will come and take me to his castle.”

“Sure,” they said. “we all dream about that.” They would then walk away laughing.

One night she heard something on her balcony–yes she had one. Don’t laugh.

She opened the doors and looked out. There was a grappling hook fastened to her balcony railing. A long rope led up to a hot air balloon floating overhead.

A handsome prince was sliding down the attached rope. She pinched herself, but she wasn’t sleeping.

“Hello, Laura,” he said as he reached the end of his rope. “I’ve finally shown up.”

“Where have you been?” she asked frowning. “You can’t believe how many times my friends have laughed at me.”

His bottom lip stuck out. He asked, “Aren’t you glad to see me? I’ve come to take you to my castle to wed you. Can you cook?”

“What else do you want me to do?” she asked.

“Well, there’s the spring cleaning and providing me with heirs–at least five.”

“You’re no bargain. I’ll marry the boy next door. He’s really nice.”

“Good, be that way,” he said and climbed back up.

THE VINE-COVERED STAIRWAY By P.S. Joshi

Twelve-year-old Sarah was visiting her grandmother in the summer of 1967 and was bored.

Her grandmother gave permission to walk through the village, but not to go near the old estate on the edge as it was dilapidated and dangerous.

Sarah entered the village and saw the estate wall with a vine-covered stairway going to the top. It looked safe so she started to climb. It was sweltering, she felt dizzy, but finally reached the top.

Was her imagination tricking her? Stretching before her was a vast green meadow with a castle in the distance. She was in medieval dress.

LUNCH BREAK by P.S. Joshi

Few knew about the castle hidden inside the island. It wasn’t even a natural island.

Beneath a layer of earth and tropical plants was a building of super-resistant metal.

Within were scientists, with sensitive electronics, checking unidentified space chatter they suspected was from an alien vessel. This was thought to be signals from a mother ship giving instructions to the invading fleet.

In outer space, zooming toward Earth in a flying saucer, were two aliens who had accidentally left their transmitter open.

“Listen, Zictus, I’m getting tired of poctus legs. Check the cooler. I know there’s some doccin salad in there that my bonded female prepared. She also made some special strained piktie root.”

“Centis, I can’t help it if my bonded female can’t cook. I certainly don’t want to hear any more about what a good cook yours is. Use telltie sauce to disguise the taste. We may have to put up with far worse on Earth.”

FURTHER ADVENTURES OF SIR RODERICK by P.S. Joshi

Sir Roderick was greatly disappointed when he saw the Spotted Stallion, his favorite drinking place. The wooden structure of inn and stables had rotted leaving only the brick fireplace and oven with the kitchen chimney. The woods had taken over the courtyard.

He was overjoyed at seeing both his old friend, Sir Thomas, and his favorite serving girl, Rose.

Thomas greeted him with a hug and moist eyes, “Roderick, you old scoundrel. I knew you’d be back.”

Rose greeted him with a peck on the cheek.

SIR RODERICK RETURNS By P.S. Joshi

It was Christmas Day in the year 1614. All the knights at the castle had feasted after the long pre-Christmas fast.

Sir Roderick felt chest pains. “Probably overate,” he thought as he drifted off to sleep.

He awoke refreshed, but met with a strange sight. Half the roof was gone, and he was sitting alone on the banquet hall floor. All furnishings were missing.

He arose and walked into the courtyard. It was overgrown with weeds. He walked to the steps down the wall. They were also covered with growth.

He would eventually learn his spirit had returned in 2014.
