Here we are this week sitting in a room with an assortment of objects on a table near the window. We’ve gathered again to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneers group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Janet Webb. Thanks, Janet.

WATER PLANT by P.S. Joshi

Sofia discovered the tiny plant on Monday growing between lily pads in the nearby stream. It looked so helpless she took pity on it and brought it inside to continue growing in water in a fish bowl on her windowsill.

On Tuesday, she was amazed to see the roots filled the bowl and the top of the plant rose above as it reached for the sun.

On Wednesday, her neighbor stopped by and found Sofia lifeless, her body covered with thick roots inserted into her.

The local doctor called the agricultural station, locked the house, and hung a DANGER sign.

AN IGNORED WARNING? by P.S. Joshi

John dreamed every night about a purple door. It was always the same. He’d touch the door and wake up.

He told his wife about it but she just told him not to pay attention.

One night he was finally able to open the door.

On the other side was a marvelous vista of an exquisite green meadow full of flowers and a magnificent castle in the distance.

John’s wife woke to find him lifeless, stiff, and cold beside her.

The doctor at the hospital spoke with her.

“The autopsy shows it was a heart attack. Was there any warning?”
