A Great Coastal City Evacuation

Here we are again and this week we’re gathered near a long line on a rainy day. We’ve come together to discuss our original stories for the week. This is the Friday Fictioneer’s group. Our hostess for the gathering is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. The challenge for each of us this week and every week is to write a story with no more than 100 words, not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and be inspired by the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Na’ama Yehuda. Thanks, Na’ama. A Great Coastal City Evacuation by P.S. Joshi

It was 2040. Rain began but didn’t stop. After two days, warnings for an evacuation began.

First, to leave by bus or private cars. Soon, the news carried a more ominous sign.

“People of New York City and other major coastal cities, ocean barriers are being breached. We’ll open them soon. On several docks, U.S. Navy ships are lining up for sea evacuation. Highways are jammed. Don’t go that way. We’re moving the present evacuation centers back for miles. Nearby airports are closing.”

Many staunch climate change deniers were forced to face the truth. Some panicked. It was expected.

This is my weekly contribution to Monday’s Finish the Story hosted by Barbara Beacham. Every Monday , Barb supplies a new picture prompt along with the first sentence to be used for the story. The original story to be written should have only 100 to 150 additional words. I’ve bolded the first sentence given with the picture prompt. Be sure to click on the little blue frog in the blue box to read the other stories.

THE FOOL By P.S. Joshi

Dropping her line into Fool’s Lake, she patiently waited for something to bite.

Sarah and her husband had decided to take a vacation here this summer.

Since she was an early riser, she had awakened this first morning at six and gone fishing. She thought, “That’s an odd name for a place. I wonder why they called it that.”

Shortly, a man about in his fifties joined her. He sat down on the edge of the dock and cast in his line.

Sarah decided to be friendly first. “Do you live near here?” she asked.

He smiled and said, “I’ve been here for some time.”

After an hour, she decided to quit fishing and go back to the cabin. “Bye.” she said to the man

He just smiled and said, “You can now say you met the darn fool who fell into the lake and drowned.”

Later, her husband smiled and said, “I heard there’s a ghost fisherman here. Did you meet him?”
