Here we are gathered together for another week. This time, we’re standing on a virtual runway near a virtual jet plane. Our hostess is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. We’re the Friday Fictioneers, and our challenge this week and every week is to each write an original story with no more than 100 words. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt provided for the week. This week’s prompt was provided by Melanie Greenwood. Thanks, Melanie.

OFF THE EDGE By P.S. Joshi
Pilot Rex Franklyn knew this would be a problem take-off. He wouldn’t be ascending, but flying off the edge of a high plateau. Just seeing that drop made him nervous. Could he make it?
His co-pilot, Lloyd Bittner, joined him.
“Well, Rex, what do you think our chances are?”
Rex wiped sweat off his forehead. “I don’t want to imagine.”
“Lloyd, your Mom wants you home. Rex put the tablecloth back on the dining table.”
Rex picked up his plane, lifting it over the table edge and into the air.
“Okay, Mom.”
“See you later, Rex,” Lloyd called back.
Thank goodness those children are flying the plane I’m in! Much better than grownups I was a bit worried there.

Thanks, Perry. I got the idea for that from a flight my brother told us about. He said the end of the runway just dropped off and the plane was in flight. There was no ascent. Yes, the plane in my story was in good hands. 😀 — Suzanne

Much better when the safety of the plane relies solely on imagination.

There’s no limit to the imagination of a child; especially when he/she is with another child. Nicely done Suzanne.

Excellent piece, Suzanne. I could just see those boys sweating it out on a short runway. Now, what’s for supper?

Phew, that was a lucky save, though I’m sure the plane would have made it! I enjoyed the little twist from reality to imagination 🙂

Thanks, Ali. I think with two such expert pilots the plane would have definitely made it. I’m so glad you liked the twist. 🙂 — Suzanne

I have been on real airports like that… But the twist was great – they will be great pilots one day.

Thanks, Bjorn. I got the idea from my brother describing a flight he was on one time. He said the plane just took off the side of a mountain with no ascent. I’m so glad you liked the twist. The boys may very well one day be good pilots. 🙂 — Suzanne

Thanks, Margaret. You’re right, they may grow up to be pilots. Sometimes children show life interests early. We just have to spot the signs. I’m so pleased you liked the story, especially the twist. 🙂 — Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,
Wonderful bait and switch here. I often think how much writing a story is akin to when we were kids playing “let’s pretend.” Well done.

Thanks, Rochelle. I so pleased you liked the story, especially the twist. I appreciate the praise a great deal. I think you’re right. It’s probably what makes writing so much fun. That child is still in there playing “let’s pretend” and “what if”. 😀 — Suzanne

This is wonderful. Of course they would have made it, but there would have been a sudden drop, some serious turbulences, and perhaps an engine on fire. The noble pilot would have saved the day–if only mums didn’t always ruin the best moments. 😀

Thanks, Gah. I’m so glad you enjoyed the story that much. Of course, there would have had to be some trouble on the takeoff. It wouldn’t have been exciting without it. And, as you say, the brave pilot would have triumphed. Mom’s can really spoil the fun. 😀 — Suzanne

Wonderful, Suzanne! I saw a sad ending coming, felt the tension, and then the relief that this was mere child’s play. Such a sweet conclusion!
