This is the first time I’ve been able to take advantage of a repeat picture prompt for Friday Fictioneers. I first wrote a story for this in April of 2014. I looked up the story and liked it pretty much the way it was. I just made a few minor changes and am presenting it about the way it was in the original.
The Friday Fictioneers is a group of writers hosted by the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. Our challenge this week and every week is to each write an original story with no more than 100 words not counting the title. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s repeat prompt was requested by Jennifer Pendergast and originally supplied by Douglas M. Macilroy. Thanks, Jennifer, and Doug.
To read the other stories by the group, just click on the link given below, then on the little blue frog in the blue box.
The link for this week’s stories is as follows:

THE COSTUME by P.S. Joshi
Halloween is my son Bradley’s favorite holiday. This year, at the age of ten, he decided to wear a costume of his own invention.
I could hear him mumbling to himself as he searched through old junk in the attic. I finally heard him yell, “Yes!”
He came downstairs carrying his granddad’s old diving helmet. This is great,” he shouted, pulling on the helmet. “I’m going outside to show my pals.”
Then from outside I heard, “Oh.” Thud.
I looked out. Bradley was sprawled on the sidewalk, probably embarrassed but apparently unhurt.
“Better pick something else, Bradley,” I advised.
Bradley was a little top heavy.

Thanks, Joseph. He sure was. When I wrote this I was remembering my son and his love of that holiday with the costumes and Trick or Treating it involved. One year it was raining and I took him and a friend around by car. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. 😀 — Suzanne

I defy anybody to watch out for the top step wearing one of those contraptions. You’re right, better choose something else. Nicely done Suzanne.

Thanks, Sandra. That’s right. I’ve fallen down steps several times and I wasn’t even wearing a helmet. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. 😀 — Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,
Oops. It seemed like a good idea, but gravity didn’t agree. 😉 Cute story.

Thanks, Rochelle. That’s right. It’s a good thing he found out and wasn’t hurt when it happened. I’m so happy you liked the story. While writing this, I was thinking of my son’s love of Halloween. 🙂 — Suzanne

Great costumes are often a pain to wear… but no pain no gain… I hope he selected something slightly less heavy.

Thanks, Bjorn. Some costumes are uncomfortable. I imagine he learned his lesson. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. 🙂 — Suzanne

I imagine those things must be heavy. Not wearing them in the water with the extra buoyancy is probably not the smartest idea, as Bradley learned. Very cute story, Suzanne!

Thanks, Chris. I bet too that they’re heavy, especially on a boat or on land. They’d be really heavy for a youngster. I’m so happy you liked the story. 😀 — Suzanne

Nicely told and kinda sweet.

Thanks, C.E. I wrote that thinking how much my son loved Halloween. It was his favorite holiday, especially the candy part, Trick or Treating. I’m so glad you enjoyed the story. 😀 — Suzanne

I did, Suzanne, very much, although I am concerned it does not end there.

Thanks, Dale. I know, right? The worst thing that happened to my son was getting blisters on his feet from Trick or Treating in the apartment building where his friend’s mother lived. The heck with paper sacks. They took pillow cases and really made a haul. I’m so happy you liked the story. 😀 — Suzanne

LOL poor Bradley; you have to feel for him. When I saw the picture, I thought, I’ve seen that before. I remember the little kid hiding under the cushions. LOL don’t remember the diving helmet though…weird 🙂

Thanks, Lyn. Yep. I used the same story as in 2014. I can’t believe it’s been that long. Some people did make something of the stuff in the corner. I centered in on the helmet. I’m so happy you liked the story. 😀 — Suzanne

At least a helmet is safe headgear for a costume. People seem to think I’ve landed on my head several times without wearing one, “Well, at least you’re not hurt.” they said.

Goodness, Russell. I’m sure you being funny has nothing to do with hitting your head. If you have fallen and hit it, at least people care. Whatever you fell into wearing that helmet would be safe for you but could cause a lot of collateral damage. I’m so happy you enjoyed the story. 😀 — Suzanne

Thanks, Yarnspinnerr. It protected him, but it also caused the fall. He’ll have to wait a few more years to safely wear that helmet. I’m so pleased you liked the story. 😀 — Suzanne
