Here we are for another week. Today we’re gathered in a virtual large city near the waterfront. There’s a virtual large building with a lighted dome. Our hostess for this group meeting is the talented and gracious author and artist, Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. We’re the Friday Fictioneers group. Our challenge this week and every week is to each write an original story with no more than 100 words. It’s supposed to have a beginning, middle, end, and follow the picture prompt for the week. This week’s prompt was supplied by C.E. Ayr. Thanks, C.E. We hope your pain has lessened.

DOME RESTAURANT by P.S. Joshi

John and Louise were seated in the new, popular Dome Restaurant.

“Oh,”–Louise gazed, her eyes wide.–“this is lovely. When was it built?”

“Everyone just says it’s new. That’s it.”–His words spilled out.–“I asked several people. They all said the same.”

“Well, I was curious.”–Louise leaned forward and squeezed his hand.–“It doesn’t matter.”

It was their first anniversary and she didn’t want it spoiled.

“Attention, people of Earth.”–A voice thundered from an overhead speaker. “We will be taking off for Planet X-19 shortly. Fear not. We came in peace.”

The restaurant rose.

IT’S HOME by P.S. Joshi

Frank eased himself down against the rough brick interior of the old burned-out building, once the Bridwell Shoe Company.

“One of these days I’ve got to find me a better home.” He’d been talking to himself for years now.

A large rat scurried by near his feet. “Durn pests,” he mumbled.

Carefully he took a newspaper-wrapped package from his pocket. He unfolded the paper slowly revealing a half-eaten sandwich.

“This restaurant food is good,”–He took a small bite.–“Can’t be more than a day old.”

He glanced around the bare brick. “Well, this is shelter anyway. Keeps off rain.”

FREEDOM by P.S. Joshi

They got on the bus and found seats near the back.

It was the first time they’d traveled alone without a parent. Allowances had been saved for weeks for their trip to Centerville and back.

Their mothers thought they were at a school friend’s house. What an adventure, age thirteen and lunch and shopping on their own.

When they arrived, they chose a restaurant. They then ate until they felt stuffed.

After they paid for the meal, they had twenty cents left.

“Oh well,” said Lucy, “we’ll shop another time.”

Doris agreed.

Somehow, they could never save that much again.

This is my weekly contribution to Monday’s Finish the Story, hosted by Barbara W. Beacham. Every Monday, Barbara supplies a new picture prompt along with the first sentence for the story. The original story to be written should have only 100 to 150 additional words. I’ve bolded the first sentence given with the picture prompt. Be sure to click on the little blue frog in the blue box, after clicking on the link, to read the other stories.

THE ORCHIDS by P.S. Joshi

“Are you laughing at me?”

He laid orchids on the table where I was sitting in the restaurant.

Laughing? I was scared half to death. He’d been following me for days. The police wouldn’t listen. After all, why should they. He was one of their own. I tried to tell them, but they wouldn’t listen.

I had dated him, but one night he slammed me to the floor, raped me, and spit on me when I screamed in pain.

His buddies on the local force said, “Well, Sal, how can we believe someone with a reputation like your’s? Brad’s a nice guy and wouldn’t hurt anybody. We’re surprised he’s interested in a woman like you. You should consider yourself lucky. Go tell someone who doesn’t know you.” They laughed at me.

That’s when I gave up on help from them. I bought a gun and practiced. I just hope I won’t have to use it.

NEW BEGINNINGS By P.S. Joshi

John had been laid off from his job at a restaurant downtown. Not one to give up, he took savings, rented space in a building, bought supplies, hired staff, and started his own restaurant.

The grand opening was scheduled for today. Everything depended on this business being a success. His wife was afraid. but tried not to show it. She was expecting their first child in several months.

He stood and looked out on the courtyard in back, waiting for the first customers. “This has to work,” he thought.

The front door opened and customers entered. “Table for four, please.”
